Being a part of legume or ‘bean’ family, groundnut is commonly grown in rain-fed regions of the country. Peanuts or groundnuts falls under the category of spices and is popularly known by different names including earthnuts, monkey nuts, pig nuts, goober peas and pygmy nuts. Peanut is considered as one of the most edible oilseed produce in the country.

More than 50 countries consume Indian peanuts because of the availability throughout the year. March and October are the best months to cultivate groundnuts. Peanuts are used in snacks, processed foods, dips and is one of the largest source of oil in the country.

India is one of the largest exporters of groundnuts to Asian Regions, CIS countries, NE Asia and West Asia. As per the survey, after China, India is considered as one of the major traders of peanuts to the Philippines, Russia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. India produces nearly 7.2 million tonnes of peanuts every year. We can say around 25% of peanut is being exported by India. In the year 2012-13, India had exported 5.35 lakh tonnes of groundnuts to foreign countries.

The demand for Indian peanuts in the international market has propagated over the last couple of years. Good harvest and a rapid rise in the export and imports of groundnuts have attracted many European countries including Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Poland, Italy and the Netherlands. The important certificates or licenses required for worldwide trading are listed below:

  • An APEDA license is required for exporting any product. It is a kind of Govt. seal mandatory for approving the standard of the product.
  • An exporter requires an Import Export Code for filling an APEDA membership.
  • An FSSAI Registration is required to commence any food business.
